Resurfacing – There many interior pool surfaces available. The four we recommend for your consideration are plaster, quartz, pebble and glass tile. Quartz and pebble surfaces were developed as solutions to the shortcomings of plaster and, like most improvements, they cost slightly more than plaster. Here’s how they compare …
- Plaster – Although not the best solution, plaster has been, until recently, the most common pool surface. People are familiar with it and it’s the least expensive of pool surfaces. Most traditional plaster is white cement mixed with limestone or marble sand. By its nature, plaster has certain limitations. Its porous surface is the most susceptible to staining and bacteria growth. Because plaster constantly reacts to water, plaster pools “use” more chemicals to maintain a balanced water chemistry. We offer a full range of traditional plaster finishes, from white to midnight blue. Our expert consultants work with you from start to finish to help you choose the right finish for your aquatic dream. Plaster typically does not last as long as other surfaces. A new plaster surface will last 5 to 10 years.
- Quartz Plaster – A quartz interior pool surface is actually a plaster surface with quartz aggregate mixed in. There are two benefits with quartz. First, quartz is a very hard material. Because a percentage of your pool interior surface is now covered with a hard, non-porous, stain-resistant material, you have a more stain-resistant, durable and longer-lasting surface than regular plaster. Second, people like quartz because you can introduce a variety of colors into your pool interior with it. Quartz is priced slightly higher than traditional plaster. You can expect a new quartz surface to last 10 to 15 years.
- Pebble Finish Plaster – A pebble pool surface is also a plaster surface with pebble aggregate mixed in. The pebbles actually comprise the majority of the surface of the pool with the obvious advantages. First, it is the most stain-resistant and most durable of the plasters. You can select from many different interesting colors which will produce a myriad of water colors. The pebble finish is reminiscent of a mountain stream or lake bed and is ideal for individuals desiring a more natural look for their pools, spas and water features. It is available in 18 attractive colors and this stain-resistant surface has a natural, non-slip texture that continues to set the industry standard of excellence. Pebble is created with pebbles from around the world that are selected for their color and beauty. A Pebble pool finish offers a unique, flexible design that will perfectly blend with landscaping and water features. Abalone fleck can be added to the standard colors to create extra sparkle. While more costly than traditional plaster, in the long run Pebble tends to be more economical to maintain. You can expect a new pebble surface to give you 12 to 20 years of good service.

- Glass Tile – As a surface for your pool – This finish is the most spectacular and expensive. It has the widest range of colorful choices. Using it inside a spa and as an accent tile on your steps and benches is a way to include this beautiful product if you do not have the budget to do the entire pool. Another type of glass tile that has recently become available is Photoluminescent pool tile. These tiles glow in the dark from 2 to 6 hours after the sun sets. While they glow, there is no need for pool lights. In fact, they glow most brilliantly with no other light.
- Waterline tile – This is the tile that surrounds your pool at the waterline. If you are remodeling your existing pool or building a new pool, we can help you pick out and envision the perfect complement to your decking and pool finish. Ask about our new Glass tile for the whole pool or spa! It’s beautiful and durable.
- Accent Tile – Accent tiles are those located on steps, benches and baja or beach entries.
- Tile Decking – While glazed tile is too slippery for pool decks, unglazed tile adds a touch of elegance to the backyard. Square tiles are the most common, but different shapes and sizes are available. Tile can also be laid over concrete using traditional grout. Some tile is self-adhesive and can be put on concrete surfaces, wooden decks, or bare ground that has been prepared and made smooth. Because tile is easy to install, you can easily enlarge your existing deck if you have the space.
Coping – If your coping is in need of repair, you can Instantly change the look of your pool with new coping. Here are some options:
- Rough cut coping is made from rough stone and has a rough or textured edge. It is sometimes referred to as country, cobble, or tumble coping and is great for giving your swimming pool a classic casual look.
- Bull nose coping can be made from any type of material including stone (granite, marble, slate), cast stone (poured concrete), brick, or steel. The main characteristic of the bull nose is its rounded edge. With the cast stone variety, thousands of different colors can be mixes in to achieve the perfect hue for your coping. This style is the standard in most pools.
- Cantilever coping is desirable if you are trying to achieve a very modern look with your swimming pool. The main characteristic of the cantilever coping options is the classic “L” shape which makes the decking material seem larger and more pronounced than it actually is. This type of pool coping runs past the edge of the swimming pool then drops off to a 90 degree angle. This coping is more for custom swimming pools and building options include flagstones, pavers, bricks, cast concrete, etc.
- Rolled edge coping can be made from stone (granite, marble, slate), cast stone (poured concrete), or brick. This style is characterized by its upturned edge which is great for inground pools whose primary purpose is exercise is it gives the swimmers something to grab hold of.

Decking – Many pool owners will spend more time on their pool deck than actually inside their swimming pool, so it is important to choose a decorative concrete, brick, tile, stone, or wood pool deck that is inviting, beautiful and provides a safe non-slip surface for sunbathing, entertaining, playing and hanging out. Choosing the right swimming pool deck is just as important as choosing the right size and shape and theme for your swimming pool.
- Poured Concrete – A popular choice for both economy and malleability, concrete can be finished in numerous colors or stamped to look like stone, tile or brick.
- Stone Decking – Stone for pool decks are available in many sizes, shapes and colors. They are great for adding a natural aesthetic to your yard. Stone decking is the most popular choice for homeowners who have designed a natural-looking swimming pool with boulders and cascading waterfalls. It is extremely durable and can work with any architectural style. Stone is durable and it provides natural friction which makes it slip-resistant.
- Pavers – Pavers come in a number of different sizes, shapes and colors. You can use the same size or mixed sizes to create patterns of your choosing. Concrete Pavers, Brick Pavers, and Travertine Pavers are some of the most common pool deck pavers. Each of these materials is suited for pool deck paving because they can endure the effects of the pool water. Pool deck pavers are used for their pleasing appearance, texture, slip-resistance and durability. Pavers are versatile choice with many options for pattern, color and design.
