Pool Resurfacing

There are actually many interior pool surfaces used throughout the world. The three most common, and the three we recommend you consider, are “plaster”, "quartz" and “pebble”. Quartz and pebble surfaces were developed as solutions to the shortcomings of plaster. . . . however neither is perfect and, like most improvements, they cost slightly more than plaster. Here's how they compare …

Plaster

When you think of pool plaster, you normally think of the smooth, white plaster surface that turns a sparkling blue when filled with water, but there are actually many choices that can be made. We offer many different colors that can be applied with the plaster to your swimming pool surface.

Plaster, although not the best, has been, until recently, the most common pool surface. People are familiar with it and it's the least expensive of pool surfaces.

Most traditional plaster is white cement mixed with limestone or marble sand. By its nature, plaster has certain limitations. Its porous surface is the most susceptible to staining and bacteria growth. Because plaster constantly reacts to water, plaster pools "use" more chemicals to maintain a balanced water chemistry and plaster typically does not last as long as other surfaces. A new plaster surface will give 5 to 10 years of good service.

Atlas Pools, Inc. offers the full range of traditional plaster finishes: from white to midnight blue. Our expert consultants work with you from start to finish to help you choose the right finish for your aquatic dream, and to ensure that the job is completed while exceeding your expectations.

Quartz A quartz interior pool surface is actually a plaster surface with quartz aggregate mixed in. There are two benefits with quartz.

First, quartz is a very hard material. And because a percentage of your pool interior surface is now covered with a hard, non-porous, stain-resistant material - quartz - you have a more stain-resistant, more durable and longer-lasting surface than plaster alone.

Second, people like quartz because you can introduce a variety of colors into your pool interior with it. Quartz is priced slightly higher than traditional plaster. You can expect a new quartz surface to give you 10 to 15 years of good service.

Pebble A pebble pool surface is also a plaster surface with pebble aggregate mixed in. The pebbles actually comprise the majority of the surface of the pool, with the obvious advantages.

It is the most stain-resistant and most durable surface available. You can select from many different interesting colors which will produce a myriad of water colors. The pebbled finish is reminiscent of a mountain stream or lake bed.

Pebble surfaces are more costly than traditional plaster. However, in the long run they tend to be more economical to maintain. You can expect a new pebble surface to give you 12 to 20 years of good service.

Please feel free to contact us for a presentation in greater detail of the different surfaces and a free no obligation price quote.

Coping

Instantly change the look of your swimming pool by remodeling the coping. There are many types and styles of coping, but they generally fall within these four categories:

Rough cut coping is made from rough stone and has a rough or textured edge. It is sometimes referred to as country, cobble, or tumble coping and is great for giving your swimming pool a classic casual look.

Bull nose coping can be made from any type of material including stone (granite, marble, slate), cast stone (poured concrete), brick, or steel. The main characteristic of the bull nose is its rounded edge. With the cast stone variety, thousands of different colors can be mixes in to achieve the perfect hue for your coping. This style is the standard in most pools.

Cantilever coping is desirable if you are trying to achieve a very modern look with your swimming pool. The main characteristic of the cantilever coping options is the classic "L" shape which makes the decking material seem larger and more pronounced than it actually is. This type of pool coping runs past the edge of the swimming pool then drops off to a 90 degree angle. This coping is more for custom swimming pools and building options include flagstones, pavers, bricks, cast concrete, etc.

Rolled edge coping can be made from stone (granite, marble, slate), cast stone (poured concrete), or brick. This style is characterized by its upturned edge which is great for inground pools whose primary purpose is exercise is it gives the swimmers something to grab hold of.

Decking

Many pool owners will spend more time on their pool deck than actually inside their swimming pool. Because of this, it is important to choose a decorative concrete, stone, or wood pool deck that is inviting, beautiful and provides a safe non-slip surface for sunbathing, entertaining, playing and hanging out. Choosing the right swimming pool deck is just as important as choosing the right size and shape of your swimming pool. One thing to remember when choosing a deck: if you have a pool with a liner, remember to leave access to the liner so that when it needs to be changed the deck will not have to be cut or removed.

Poured Concrete Poured concrete is popular both for affordability and malleability – concrete can be finished in numerous colors, or it can be stamped so that it looks like stone, tile or brick. This type of surface is very similar to the stone finish.

Stone Decking Stones for pool decks are available in many sizes, shapes and colors. They are great for adding a natural aesthetic to your yard. Stone decking is the most popular choice for homeowners who have designed a natural-looking swimming pool with boulders and cascading waterfalls. It is extremely durable and can work with any architectural style. Stone finish is also a very convenient option due to its durability. The stone finish pool deck resurfacing is done by embedding large stones, finely cut into a layer of concrete. Another great advantage of this surface is that it provides natural friction which proves to be very useful, as it is almost slip proof.

Pavers Pavers come in a number of different sizes, shapes and colors. You can use the same size or mixed sizes to create patterns of your choosing. Concrete Pavers, Brick Pavers, and Travertine Pavers are some of the most common pool deck pavers. Each of these materials is suited for pool deck paving because they can endure the effects of the pool water. One of the key features that pool deck pavers create is safety. Pool deck pavers are used for the aesthetic effect and texture it brings to the pool deck area, while at the same time pool deck pavers have a high wear and tear resistance and have a non-slip surface that will last a long time. Pool deck pavers are so versatile giving you many options for the patterns and design possibilities.

Tile Decks While glazed tile is too slippery for pool decks, unglazed tile adds a touch of elegance to the backyard. Square tiles are the most common, but you can find different shapes and sizes from specialty dealers. Tile is available in many designs to replicate wood, marble, stone or brick. Some tile is self-adhesive and can be put on concrete surfaces, wooden decks, or bare ground that has been prepared and made smooth. Because tile isn't difficult to install, you can make your existing deck larger if you have the space. Tile can also be laid in concrete or by using traditional grout.
